What are legal directories?
In the UK there are two main legal directories, called the Chambers and Partners UK Solicitors’ Guide and The Legal 500 UK Solicitors’ Guide, or simply Chambers and Partners and The Legal 500.
Both directories were founded in the late 1980s and aimed to provide an independent guide to the UK legal profession, by ranking teams and individual law firms, broadly according to specialism and geography. The Guides were initially aimed at providing general counsel and other sophisticated buyers of legal services an understanding of the ‘best in house’ lawyers, however increasingly both sets of rankings include more consumer-facing legal services such as Family, Private Client, Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury.
